MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

CECI BASTIDA
AND
ROKA HUEKA

Ceci Bastida was born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico where as a teenager she was a founding member of Mexican ska-punk pioneers Tijuana NO. After joining the band of Julieta Venegas as keyboardist and back-up singer, she went solo and has now released two critically acclaimed full length albums, Veo la Marea (featuring contributions by Diplo, Tim Armstrong, & Rye Rye) and La Edad de la Violencia (produced by XXXChange and Luke Top). Her song “Cuando Vulevas a Caer” was nominated for a Latin Grammy and her mix of beat and horn blasted songs with political and social commentaries on everything from immigration to the drug war has been featured on NPR, The Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone Mexico, among others. Currently, she is also a member of Mexrrissey and is collaborating with South African musician/producer Spoek Mathambo. 

 

ROKA HUEKA

Combining traditional and contemporary Latin ska, Roka Hueka is a band with members originating from Mexico, El Salvador, and the US. Singer Andres Gonzalez brought his love for energetic ska from Chihuahua, Mexico to Colorado. Finding time from his job as a construction worker, he formed one of Denver’s only Latin Ska groups in the fall of 2013.

Seasoned Bassist Ric Urrutia has played with political Latin-fusion/hip-hop act Debajo del Agua since 2006. He has also collaborated with Roka Hueka drummer Blake Pendergrass performing with local hip-hop artists. Rounding out Roka Hueka are the jazz-trained horn section. Trombonist Hansen Millison has played music since age 10 in concert band, marching band, jazz band, youth orchestra, pit orchestra, and a Middle Eastern music ensemble, currently is going for a music and psychology double major at CU boulder. In the pursuing of a trombone performance degree with a jazz emphasis. and trumpet player Matt Wikolak is studying music at CU Boulder and has shared the stage with nationally renowned musicians including Dave Douglas, Art Lande, and Paa Kow.
